Random Thoughts of an Old (Weird) Geezer
Chapter 4
Sports
I’m not a big sports fan even though I frequently watch the NASCAR races and once they are over for the year, I usually catch a little football on the tube. Do I really care who wins – or loses for that matter? Nah. It’s just interesting to watch the competitions and observe the strategies involved. OK, so the football cheerleaders are part of my motivation to watch. So? I’m a guy for Christ’s sake. My umbrella thought on sports is that it’s a good diversion from the day-to-day realities of life. A good way to relax and let off steam – a frequently a good way to act stupid with a bunch of other folks that are acting the same way you are. Cool!
Sports Moms and Dads
Some of you are getting carried away and are destroying the basic intent behind your offspring’s involvement in a team. You have an annoying tendency to give the coaches, umpires, and even other parents a ration of shit. Stop it! Instead, do your best to be a good – repeat “GOOD” – role model for your son or daughter. They will be better adults for your efforts.
Baseball Caps
If you are one of those who wears his (I chose this particular gender because that’s where I’ve most often noticed this phenomena) baseball-type hat in a position that produces an adjusting strap imprint on your forehead, I think you look silly. Just my opinion…
Oops… my cardboard and Elmer’s Glue soapbox just collapsed. Therefore – moving right along…
I’m an Alien
I’ve been called worse and maybe sometimes for good reason, but I’ve grown fairly comfortable with the “alien” reference. You see, after diligent study and some flat-assed guesswork I feel comfortable in believing that we humans are basically spiritual creatures who are spending a short time on planet earth occupying cool but awkward animal bodies. We are here to learn what we can and help folks in the best way we know how. When our critter bodies crap out, we can go back home (the other side, heaven, the great beyond, whatever you want to call it) to do whatever it is that we do there. Seems pretty simple to me really…
Spooky Stuff
I’m not a believer in the supernatural or paranormal. I figure that some of this strange stuff we hear about is probably due to our overactive imaginations – both with and without the influence of certain chemical substances. The rest of it is all logical and explainable but not necessarily with the scientific information we presently have at out fingertips. Considering ourselves as spiritual entities does rip off some of the mystery wrapping though.
People do what they
do for a Reason
Always. I doesn’t make any difference how stupid, illogical, uncaring or downright mean a person’s actions might be, there is always a reason why he or she did what they did. Sometimes the reasons seem to be obvious. Greed, jealousy, anger, fear. Other times it’s just hard to find any even warped logic in a person’s actions. But there is something – some event or situation in their past or present that has caused them to act “abnormally”. We’ll probably never know what it was. That’s OK. The main thing is that even though we may not agree with what someone said or did, we’re not in a position to condemn or judge them. We haven’t walked in their shoes. Besides we each have enough to do trying to deal with our own personal baggage and resulting peculiarities.
One more thing. I realize that sometimes we are placed in a position of “judging” another when there is a possibility he or she has broken a law. Here we are judging a person’s actions – not just the person. I think there is a subtle difference.
A Little More on This
The flip side of this is that people act caringly with love and compassion for a reason too. In addition to their genetics, I would imagine most these folks have benefitted from some very positive influences in their lives. Cool! And yeah, I think it’s up to each one of us to try to live our lives so that we are one of those positive influences. What do you think?
A Thought
There is a theory
which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for
and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something
even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that
this has already happened. - Douglas
