More Random Thoughts of an Old (Weird)
Geezer
Chapter 11
A Few Sounds I Remember
Sounds
from a loooooong time ago. The
whoosh… whoosh… whoosh… of the Union Pacific Railroad steam engine as it
started to move down the tracks. Its whistle in the distance.
The sound of coyotes howling from over by the creek. Frogs croaking down in the
pond. The clanging of the school
bell to let us know recess was over. The rhythmic beat of the old John Deere tractor. A chicken house room filled with baby chicks.
The morning crow of
the roosters. Whooping cranes as
they flew over the house on their migration.
Mom playing the piano on Sunday afternoons. The crunch of footsteps on
crusty snow.
Old People
An observation…
there are definitely fewer really old people around now than when I was a very
young boy. (I really don’t need to
explain this do I? Nah, I didn’t think
so…)
Pretty Ladies
Another
observation… there are a lot more pretty ladies in the world now than when I
was a very young boy. (Good, you do have the concept…) This particular viewpoint is definitely
working to my advantage. Life is good…
A Frequently Asked Question
… of any male. “What is
the first thing you notice about a female?”
The only 100 percent truthful answer is “It all depends on whether she’s
walking toward me or away from me.” All
other answers are total BS.
My First Dirty Joke
No, I’ll not repeat
it here mainly because it’s really dumb.
It was about a young boy who was sent by his mother to the grocery store
and he kept repeating the three items he needed to purchase. He falls down, gets pissed and skips off now
saying a couple of inappropriate words.
It was a stupid joke when I was about six years old. It’s still stupid. I wish I could forget it.
A Quick Question
What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.
(Sorry. I really need to cut back on the caffeine…)
I Wonder Why
I wonder why a lot
– and I mean a LOT – of shoppers leave their carts strewn around the store
parking area instead of returning them to the nearby cart racks. I even see the carts sitting in the middle of
parking spaces right next to their designated gathering point. Maybe there are many more really old or disabled
folks shopping at that particular store than I would have imagined. Or maybe these shoppers are all on critical
time-tables and can’t afford to use that extra minute or two to return the cart
to the collection rack. It couldn’t be
that these shoppers just don’t care, could it?
Or that they are lazy? Nah,
mature adults just wouldn’t be that way… would they?
We have all the Help We Need
I have come to the
conclusion that every one of us has all the help we’ll ever need to do whatever
it is we need to do. It just doesn’t
make sense that we would be plopped on this old planet only to then be
completely deserted by our Master Plopper. If we are truly basically spiritual beings as
I believe we are, I think it reasonable that we are watched over – and have the
ability to seek guidance – from other spiritual beings. Beings who do not
physically walk with us on this good earth.
Call them whatever you wish.
Angels, guardian angels, guides, mentors, friends… I think they are with
us and that they are helping us more that we could possibly imagine. I feel comforted believing that.
I Am
This thought
absolutely blows my mind every time I think about it. I actually exist. I am alive.
I am here on this amazing planet as a functioning, reasonably
intelligent mammal. For a gazillion
years, I wasn’t here. Now I am. How is that possible? What a wonderful thing it is to exist - to
be. Wow!
Teachers
I’ve had a lot of
wonderful teachers so far in my life.
And no, I’m not necessarily talking about the ones who have the job of
passing along information in a formal educational setting. I’m instead, referring to all the other folks
who have had a part in my education at the
I Find It Strange
… that we humans actually have massive organizations and
businesses that are dedicated to researching, developing and manufacturing a
wide variety of items whose sole purpose is for the killing of other human
beings. This does not seem to speak well
for our species.
Enjoying the Tunes
I like music. Not all types of course, but I guess because
I have at least a fundamental understanding of the mechanics (physics, math)
that forms the basis for our tunes I can appreciate even those kinds of music
that I wouldn’t listen to every day. I
understand too, that we are more likely to enjoy the music that we heard in our
earlier years. That’s the way I am. I like the tunes from the 1940’s, 50’s and
60’s a lot more than the later stuff. I
enjoy listening to singers who actually know how to enunciate the lyrics
instead of sounding like they are trying to sing with a mouthful of pizza. I enjoy instrumentals that creatively display
the basic principles of music – harmony, chord progressions, etc. And no, I don’t like the uh… music that
sounds like it could have been recorded entirely from the noises of a local
auto body shop. The younger folks seem
to like it though so I know it’s just me and my preferences talking.
Music is one of the
better gifts we humans have received.
Now where did I put that Chet Atkins album?
