Slightly Off the Beaten Path – One Man’s Opinion

Another Vote for Gay Marriage

*Note:  Just to put this piece into perspective – it is written from the viewpoint of an individual raised in a Methodist Christian tradition and who has, over the years, transitioned away from this structured line of thought.

ANOTHER VOTE FOR GAY MARRIAGE

…or at the very least, a legally recognized agreement that would afford the same benefits and privileges that are presently accorded a married man and woman.

From the “note” at the beginning of this piece, you can safely bet that I haven’t always felt this way.  I not only learned that homosexuality was weird, abnormal, and sort of sick, I learned that it was sinful, forbidden by passages in the bible and was certainly against the “will of God”.  Yeah, I learned some really strange shit in Sunday school and church.

Over the years, I have found out that none of that “bad” stuff is in the least little bit true.  This transition might have started somewhere around the time I began thinking that intimate lesbian activity – in the appropriate setting of a nearby couch or bed, of course – would be a major turn-on.  (I’m a guy, remember...)  Anyway, some time after that I also realized that the bible and in particular the Old Testament, was written a long, long time ago by folks who obviously had no inkling of genetics – nor were they inclined to promote any concept other than those which had been on the approved list for centuries.  That’s not saying that there weren’t any liberals around at the time.  They just didn’t get to contribute on this subject to the writings that would later become the bible.

Now I do realize that there are still a bunch of people (unfortunately some of them in positions of power) walking the face of this planet who are really hung up on the “ancient wisdom” and the old taboos.  And yes, I understand that every single one of them has their own personal reasons for feeling the way they do.  I just think that is really unfortunate that we as a society are prone to providing so many different groups with privileges and protective rights, yet we have not seen fit to do the same for the thousands of gay couples who truly love one another – and who want to share their lives within a legal bond.

Shame on us…
