Let’s Just Chat
In previous articles, we’ve
talked about the possibility of easy two-way communications between us and
whoever we consider to be our spiritual leader.
Since many of us consider this ultimate leader to be God, in this article
we’ll discuss a technique we can use to help make our conversations a bit more
meaningful. Before we have anyone
getting bent out of shape because of some of the things I’ll be talking about,
remember that all I’m doing here is offering a few possible solutions to some
of the obstacles that most of us have probably encountered in our spiritual
efforts to communicate. They’re just my
opinions – and it’s an approach that seems to work well for me.
Many of us have grown
accustomed to imaging God as an identifiable entity (or entities) toward whom
we can direct our prayers and chants. We
have personified this ultimate power to allow us to relate more easily with the
spiritual aspect of our lives. It seems
like a logical approach. Trying to talk with a vague “universal consciousness”
just doesn’t hack it for me. Just as
trying to talk with some white-robed, vengeful, thunderbolt-wielding entity
sitting on a big old throne somewhere off in a dreamy hereafter doesn’t cut it
either. This dude can kill me and send
me to hell if he wants! Way too scary!
I’ve grown to believe that
it’s perfectly OK if I image God any way that I want. And the more I can adapt this image to fit my
personality and beliefs, the better luck I’ll have at being able to express
myself honestly and to ask the questions that will most benefit me as a
spiritual entity. And – yes, the better
the chances of my getting back meaningful answers or information. Besides, I’m fairly well convinced that the
“Big System” is based on love and that alone will provide us with a bunch of
flexibility in our approach to learning our lessons. I also happen to think that the system –
including God – has a great sense of humor that would condone and maybe even
encourage us to get creative in our approach to this spirituality thing. I certainly hope so anyway. Otherwise – I’m screwed! (And yeah, I’m sitting here smiling as I
write this, feeling fairly certain that my approach is just fine…)
So, just what is my approach
– my image of God for conversational purposes?
Hang on, Martha! This may be an
“E” ticket ride for some of you. First,
I dragged God out of “heaven” and right now have his butt plopped in the chair
just behind me. I’ve found that he’s
also quite receptive to sitting at the kitchen table, on a park bench, at the
bar, in the car, on a rock or any place you’d like to have him. The beard, robe and imposing look are long
gone. In their place, I see (this is a
mental image thing, remember?) a guy about five-eight, somewhat pudgy, about 45
years old, clean shaven, dark hair and dressed in sweat pants and sweat
shirt. And oh yeah, running shoes –
white with a cool dark blue decoration. He
smiles a lot, too. He knows everything I
think and everything I’m going to say before I say it. But I say it anyway – at least mentally – so
it will be clearer to me.
We spend a lot of time just
BS’ing. OK, so most of the BS is mine
but it’s a good way to clear out my mental cobwebs (spider webs for you
non-Midwestern types). It’s really
cool. It’s just like I’m talking with my
best friend – and truthfully, there’s a good chance I am.
How do I get information
back to me? Different ways. Sometimes thoughts seem to just pop into my
head. Sometimes through things other people
say and do. Sometimes through situations
I see occurring around me. Sometimes I
just feel an “urge” to do a particular thing.
How do I know this information is coming from the “other side”? I don’t.
There’s no way to know exactly where it’s coming from and I don’t know
that the source is particularly critical to anything. And – as I’ve said before in other articles
related to spiritual matters – I don’t consider any of this to be particularly
mysterious or supernatural. It’s
completely natural. It’s just the way it
is.
On top of that, it’s one
hell of a lot of fun. I don’t know how
we humans got so focused on the serious stuff of life – especially those things
related to religion or spirituality. I
can’t for the life of me see how that could be the foundation intent of this great
creation we’re a part of. Oh sure,
serious stuff happens but a good bit of that is due to our own actions. And I would imagine that some of it is
related to the lessons that each one of us need to learn.
For those of you who are
looking for a closer relationship with God – or whatever your idea of the
supreme power happens to be – you might consider trying a re-imaging technique
similar to the one I’ve just mentioned.
Create your own personal image of God and go from there. Don’t worry about hackin’
him off – and don’t worry about anything you have or have not done in this
life. Remember the “love” thing? I think we’re pretty safe in going with that
concept.
So - even if you don’t buy
in at all to any of the things I’ve been discussing, I would encourage you to
at least do those things you personally feel you should do to make a really
good connection with whatever or whoever you believe your spiritual leader or
supreme power to be. It can be the
foundation of an exciting, fulfilling, enjoyable life! Have fun chatting…
